Wonhyo¢¥s Concept of Ta£þthagatagarbha in the Perspective of Analytical Psychology

Abstract
This paper is to elucidate the concept of Tathagatagarbha viewed by Wonhyo(617- 678AD), a great scholar of Buddhism and a well-known Zen-master in Korea, in the perspective of analytical psychology.
Tathagatagarbha in Sanscrit denotes Mind. The concept of Tathagatagarbha as Mind is diverse in the traditions of Buddhism. However, it can be summarized as two concepts. The one is that Tathagatagarbha is viewed from the appearance, and the other from the reality. Wonhyo views, however, it from the both aspects based on his harmonic, totalistic view of the world.
Such a concept of Tathagatagarbha viewed by Wonhyo is considered as identical with Jung¢¥s concept of ¢¥unconscious self or self image which manifests itself as symbol. Symbol, Sinn-Bild in German, is an appearance or image concealing or conceiving meanings which are always connected to the self. Jung¢¥s concept of symbol is based on his symbolic view of the world which is considerded as consonant with Wonhyo¢¥s harmonic, totalistic view of the world.
